Your hair’s degree of porosity will determine your entire haircare routine.

After discovering your hair type (article here), we’ll look at another aspect that characterizes it!

So, do you have porous hair? Let’s go!
What is porous hair?

Porosity is the hair’s capacity to absorb and retain water.
We all have more or less porous hair, but some more than others.
The more the scales of the hair are open, the more porous the hair will be.

There are 3 levels of porosity, ranging from low to high:

Low-porosity hair:
The scales being very tight, they have difficulty absorbing water and haircare treatments, moreover, once the water reaches the heart of the hair, it takes a long time to come out!

Medium-porosity hair:
This is so-called "normal" hair, the scales are tight but not too tight, which allows haircare treatments to penetrate and moisture does not escape too quickly or too slowly.

High-porosity hair:
The scales are very open, water and haircare treatments penetrate too much and leave as quickly as they arrived. This is often hair that has undergone a lot of chemical treatments; coloring, bleaching, use of appliances that are too hot; straightening, relaxing, etc. Or it could mean that you have an iron deficiency!

How do you find out your hair’s porosity?

There are telltale signs: dry hair, difficult to style, takes a long time to dry, etc. But you can do the glass of water test to confirm your intuition.
Put a small strand of hair in a glass of water. If, after 3 minutes, it is on the surface, that means you don’t have porous hair. If it is in the middle of the glass, you have medium-porosity hair, and if it is at the bottom of the glass, you can be sure that you have high-porosity hair.

How to care for your hair according to its porosity:

Hair that is not very porous needs heat during treatment to open up the scales and allow the products to penetrate better. You can wash the hair with warm water to help it do this. For masks and oil baths, you can use a self-heating cap or cellophane to improve effectiveness. Low-porosity hair mainly needs hydrating products, you can use the Naturalong Multi-Use Oil Blend.

Medium-porosity hair normally regulates itself, hair without headaches! It absorbs haircare treatments and retains them without a problem, do not do anything that could disrupt its balance. Follow a normal haircare routine with a mild shampoo and a complementary treatment, such as the Naturalong Wash&Go Routine.

High-porosity hair needs an acidic pH and cool temperatures to close its scales at the end of a treatment, which will allow it to retain its benefits for longer. An oil bath in the evening (Naturalong Multifunctional Oil Cocktail) and rinsing with a few drops of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar mixed into the water after shampooing and you’re done. You can then use the Naturalong Hydrating Refresh Curl Spray or a hydrating hair lotion like the Karigins Hair Booster Hydra-Growth Lotion or the Naturalong Hair Booster Lotion.
